  pindan gets its rich red colour from iron oxides; although brick-hard when dry, it becomes soft and greasy when wet, and is readily eroded by the highest spring tides. Much of the sediment eroded away will settle on the flats, temporarily blocking invertebrate burrows, but also bringing nutrients into the bay
